NTRP Rating Verbal Description and Comments
1.5 – 2.0 You could describe yourself as a newbie. You know how to serve and hit points but you haven’t got any tennis game consistency. You have figured how to keep score. You know the game and want to meet up with other people who have the same passion.
Admin Comments: Recreational division, About 5% of the tennis players are in this skill level. You’re a competitive beginner. We’d like all Beginner’s to participate in the Tennis Partner Program until they get sufficient experience to participate in the leagues.
2.5 Needs on-tennis court experience. Has obvious stroke weaknesses but is familiar with basic sides for singles and doubles play. 2.5 Learning to judge where the ball is going although tennis court coverage is less than adequate. Can keep a short rally of weak pace with other players of the same skill level.
Admin Comments: Recreational skill level, About 10% of the players are in this division. You’re an advanced beginner in this category. We hope the minimum ability players have is to be able to serve and maintain a couple stroke rally.
3.0 Moderately consistent when hitting mid-paced strokes, but isn’t comfortable with all tennis strokes and lacks execution when seeking for guiding control, depth or power.
3.25 You’re in-between 3.0 and 3.5 Skill grade.
3.5 Has accomplished improved tennis stroke dependability with directional control on average tennis shots, but still lacks depth and diversity. Starting to display more aggressive net play, has improved court coverage and is developing teamwork in doubles.
3.75 You’re in-between 3.5 and 4.0 Skill rating.
Comments: Advanced2 Skill Level, This division appears when the program’s league is big enough and we have adequate returning tennis players. The addition of this division allows the program to fine tune the skill levels and the matches incline to be closer.
4.0 Has dependable strokes, including directing control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate tennis shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. From Time to Time forces errors when serving.
4.5 Starting to master the use of power and spins and beginning to handle pace, has sound footwork, can control depth of tennis shots and is beginning to vary game plan according to opponents. Can hit first serves with power and accuracy and place the second serve. Tends to over hit on difficult strokes.
Admin Comments: Elite division, About 5% of the tennis players are in this skill level. Most players need to earn their way into this division or have proof of 4.5 rating.
