UB Sebok Twitter Blowout

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Ultimate Bet is trying to change its image and move away from their scandalous poker online past. Recently they acquired Joe Sebok as a member of their professional poker online team. He’s a positive representative for their company, and this was needed with Phil Helmuth and Annie Duke as their big names prior. But not only is Sebok a great online poker personality and news buff, he’s also really popular. To celebrate Sebok’s 1 millionth Twitter follower, UB is putting $24,000 worth of bonus prizes into a $5.50 MTT on their site. There will be several knockout bounties: $500 for KO’ing one of 7 UB pros, and $1500 for Sebok himself. Then, the final table will all get $1050 seats into the UBOC main event tournament and will play a SNG for an $8500 package to the 2010 Aruba event. Finally, the winner will play in a freeroll heads up match against Sebok for $1,000. This is an amazing amount of free money for players in a $5 tournament. To miss this event if you are a casual poker player would be ridiculous. UB is definitely making some good marketing moves and some updates to their site which will regain confidence in the poker community and get people playing on their site.

Small Blind Bets

Friday, November 6th, 2009

In Texas Hold ‘Em poker, there are two blind bets that start the action, the big and small blinds. The small blind puts in half the big blind bet pre-flop, and has the option to call the full big blind when the action comes back.

The small blind position is at a big disadvantage at the online poker table post-flop because the small blind must act first in every subsequent betting round before anyone else.

Because the small blind has to act first, it is best to only play the most premium cards from this position if a raise comes out pre-flop. If no raise comes out, the small can complete to a full bet at a discount. Completing the bet though does carry risk since the big blind then can raise the blind too since the big blind acts last pre-flop.

From small blind position, either calling or folding pre-flop are the most prudent actions to take. If you can see a cheap flop, go for it.

Raising from the small blind position is risky since there is still the big blind betting behind and because the small blind is under the gun to act first after the flop. If you do get monster cards, like pocket Aces or faces, in the small blind position, a raise is warranted, especially when only a few players have limped into the pot, and you could steal it pre-flop. Keep this in mind when you play online poker.

Poker Terms: ‘Muck’

Friday, July 24th, 2009

In its application for poker online, the term ‘muck’ has two uses, both as a noun and as a verb.

In noun form, the word ‘muck’ refers to the discard or ‘dead’ cards in a hand, casino cards folded by other players or burned from the deck in dealing the flop and river, etc. These cards can not be used in play. They also do not count the cards remaining in the deck, even if those cards are near the bottom and have no chance of being dealt into the hand.

The verb form of ‘muck,’ then, refers to a player’s action of throwing his cards away, into the ‘muck.’ Once a poker player’s cards hit the muck they are dead and can not be returned, even if the player had mistakenly folded a winning hand. There is little room for negotiation in this matter, as with the reservoir of other cards there, it can be hard to say what cards came from who, etc.

The muck acts as a sort of dead zone or netherworld of passed-on cards, which you will often see players who wish they hadn’t folded reaching out for in desperation, or, alternatively, throwing their cards into as fast as they can when they had something they would prefer nobody else get to see.

Hog Roast Cooking

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The hog roast we love today hasn’t varied much from the time of our ascendents, although we have become a little more sophisticated with our spit roasting techniques, adding herbs and marinades to produce fabulous flavours while slowly turning the hog roast over wood or gas flames. Our caveman ancestors would also have had problems with their cooking times to start with; you can imagine their hog roast, crispy on one side and rare on the other. I’m sure they also had their very own Marco Pierre White who got rather angry with anyone who complained their spit roast was over cooked.Takeout hog roasting or spit roasting has become very popular and is now a stock menu item at many weddings. A whole hog goes a long way and feeds up to 120 guests when served into a bun or bread roll. So besides the juicy mouth watering flavour of a hog spit roast you are getting incredible value for your money plus you have the added bonus of a theatrical event. There’s usually a gasp of delight when the hog is raised from its oven and the heady aroma assails your nostrils as the sight of the golden brown hog with amazing crispy crackling comes in to view.

Losing Money in Poker

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Based on what I observe, the reason that many new or inexperienced players lose money playing poker is because they chase too many draws.

And the reason many people do this is because they don’t understand poker pot odds. Listen, I understand the appeal of wanting to play suited connectors, especially when you are four to the flush or on a straight draw on the flop.

But, if you play those hands every time, you’ll lose 80% of the time, and you won’t be making much money that way. Understanding pot odds gives you a better strategy on when you chase draws and when not to.

I would recommend reading books written by the professionals for in depth lessons on pot odds. When I first started playing seriously, I read many fine books, I remember in particular Championship Hold em by T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy having a fine section on pot odds. But regardless of what books you read, they usually contain valuable information to help you along your poker playing way.

Another thing I notice too from newer poker players is overbetting the pot. Like, say I am in a hand with someone and the pot is $3 and there are two hearts on the flop. We both check, then another heart comes up on the turn.

Now, the other player goes all in for $40. Why would do you that? If you have a flush, don’t you wan to entice me to call? And if you’re bluffing, why risk all your chips for a $3 pot? What if I actually have the flush.

Sadly, though, I see plays like this all the time. But people who want to be serious about their game will constantly practice, read, learn, and absorb as much information as possible.

Playing Tips: Playing a Draw Hand

Friday, September 5th, 2008

In Texas Holdem A draw is a hand that is a card or two short of the one you want. If you have three hearts and are waiting for two more, you’ve got a flush draw, and if you’ve got a 2, 3, 4, and 6, you’ve got a straight draw.

Now, it can be exciting to be so close to having a great hand, but waiting on a bad draw can kill you. Oftentimes a player will get a draw from the flop and bet all the way to the river hoping to hit their hand. Oftentimes these players go broke.

It can be hugely tempting to have three spades after the flop and think that you’ve got it made, but if you bet on hitting that hand, you’re betting to lose. The fact is that if you need both the turn and the river card to hit for you to make your hand, you’re better off folding. On the other hand, if you’ve got a four card draw after the flop, your odds are a lot better to hit the card you need, so when playing poker make it a general rule to make sure you have four draw cards before you bet.
