Laptop on Cruise

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

For many of us personal computers and laptops have an important role in work and life. We all know that, and apparently cruise lines know that too.
That is the reason why they put a lot of effort into facilities and services that will cover information technology needs of passengers.
For many people it is enough just to exchange few emails with their families or friends during vacation and they can do that from internet caf© located either on the ship or in the port.

However, there are a certain number of cruisers that don’t want to separate from their laptops even during their precious vacation time on ship. This could be for various reasons: catching-up their work if needed, keeping on internet activities or games or having access to personal files such are photos or videos, etc…

There are some things to keep in mind when you decide to bring laptop to cruise:

Before booking check with cruise line or travel agent is there and what kind of internet access is available on ship. That really depends from one ship to another.

Few scenarios are possible:

• No internet access at all, in this case you can use your laptop in your cabin or anywhere else but only offline

• Internet access trough ship’s local area network, you will need network cable to connect and probably ship’s IT personnel to help you with setup

• WI-FI access is best and most comfortable solution, available mostly on new, modern ships. You can use your laptop wherever you want, in your cabin or in any public area where WI-FI signal is present. Of course, your model needs to have wireless access antenna to use this feature.

Note that lines charge internet access and it’s usually not included in fare. Prices may vary and you better check them in advanced.

Another important issue to consider is security. You cannot carry your laptop with you all the time and it’s good to know few things on how to avoid headache caused by loosing valuable data or such-like …

• First make a good backup of all of your data on some media like CD or memory stick and keep it on safe at home. If you do that, whatever happens to the laptop you will have your data and be able to recover from loss.

• Remove your business data from laptop before trip if they are not absolutely necessary. In case it’s stolen, for sure the last thing you want is that potential thief has a top classified data from your company. This happens more often than you would think and in some cases consequences can be disastrous. So remove your business data on CD mentioned above, keep it on safe place and put them back on after vacation. If it is really necessary to have business data on it even on a cruise you may consider using software encryption to secure them.

• Secure access to your laptop with password. Most basic password protection is the one implemented in your operating system (Microsoft Windows mostly). In most cases this will protect you from non welcomed users. For extra protection it is also possible to use BIOS password. BIOS is basic computer setup menu which can be accessed if you press DEL (or some other key depending of manufacturer) key during machine startup. This function is usually being displayed as “press DEL to enter setup” on most laptops. Three kind of passwords are possible to enable that:

1. Boot password – to allow only authorized booting up of operating system.

2. Hard disk lock password – to secure your hard disk with password in case it has been removed from your laptop and used in some other machine.

3. BIOS access password – is to secure entering BIOS settings where first two passwords can be turned off.
Those advanced measures are not recommended to be handled by inexperienced users. If you decide to use BIOS passwords it is highly recommended to ask for a professional assistance.

• If your cabin has a safe and laptop can fit in use it. Since this is not the case on most of the ships, another option is to check if your machine has a security lock slot. If it does, you can purchase a security cable which enables you to lock laptop to some non movable object and prevent theft. Recently on market
can be found another type of security cables that use VGA port if your model does not have security slot.

• Avoid making naive mistakes like having a sheet of paper with passwords in carrying case or such-like

• Do not leave your laptop on public places like hotel lobbies or airports without keeping an eye on it

Of course, not all measures mentioned above should be necessary but that’s all up to you to make the best judgment on how to protect your assets.
Taking a few simple precaution measures can spare you of trouble and definitely can prevent ruining your vacation.

Parador of Hondarribia

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

The Parador of Hondarribia is near the French border just a short distance from San Sebastian, and within easy visiting distance of Bilbao and the wonderful Guggenheim museum.
Parador Hondarribia is a 10th century castle built by the King of Navarre in the early days of the Christian re-conquest. The powerful Caliph, Al-Mansur, was a constant threat to the area in the those times, but King Sancho Abarca and the castle at Hondarribia were spared because the King had given one of his daughters in marriage to the Caliph – there have always been advantages to “keeping it all in the family!”

The castle was remodeled in the 16th century by Emperor Charles the Fifth. Napoleon stayed here for some time during the wars between Spain and France and many other notable figures in the history of Spain and Europe have stayed here as well.

The Parador of Hondarribia is situated on the banks of the Bidasoa estuary and provides beautiful views out to the sea. This is every bit the castle people imagine castles to be with its monolithic stone walls (still pockmarked by cannon-fire from old wars), and interior decorations of medieval armor, weaponry and tapestries. The Parador contains many charming nooks and corners perfect for quiet sitting, reading and intimate conversation.

Interesting nearby excursions from Parador Hondarribia:

- The fishermen’s area of the waterfront, and the La Marina quarter.

- The wonderful castle at San Telmo.

- Nuestra Seora de la Asuncin y Manzano parish church, Gothic 15-16th c.

- Calle Mayor and Plaza de Guipzcoa (admire the many stately houses).

- There are nearby golf courses, and plenty of opportunities for diving, sailing, surfing and fishing.

Interesting day trips include:

- Pamplona – Parador Hondarribia is a good place to find accommodations during the Fiesta San Fermin (running of the bulls) when they are nearly impossible to get in Pamplona itself.

- Bilbao – the Guggenheim museum is a “must see.”

- Rioja wine country – visit the wineries and vinyards along the Ebro river near Logrono.

- Biarritz and Bayonne – wonderful beaches, casinos and nightlife.

The Hondarribia Parador does not have a restaurant, but there are fine restaurants within a short distance, and the cuisine of this area of Spain is renowned. A well, the fascinating city of San Sebastian is only a few miles away, and it has some of the finest restaurants in all of Spain. The Parador does serve a buffet breakfast in a wonderful little dining room overlooking the water.

For intrepid travelers visiting north central Spain or Southwestern France – the Parador of Hondarribia makes a historically fascinating and culturally interesting place to stay for a night – or for a week of nights!

SpainParador.com makes it easy for you to plan and arrange your next trip to Spain. This time stay in palaces, castles, and other places of great historical interest and rare beauty – the wonderful Paradors of Spain. http://www.SpainParador.com

Fun Easter Crafts and Food Ideas for Kids

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

Pastel colors and cotton balls, Easter grass and yellow peeps – all bring to mind baskets of eggs, bunnies and pretty little girl dresses. Ah Spring. After a long cold winter, it’s fun to start planning spring-time and Easter projects with your kids. Here are a few fun ideas for Easter crafts and yummy snacks that your kids can help make and of course – eat!

Paper Bag Easter Bunny

1 lunch sack for 1 paper bag
Pink, white, and black construction paper
Scissors
Crayons
Paste

Cut a V notch at the top of each lunch sack. Start at the top center and bring your notch down. This will form the ears. Close the bag and lie flat. Then cut your notch with both sides of the bag together. This will be the bunny ears. Cut out ear shapes with the white construction paper and glue onto “ear” of the bag. Cut a smaller piece in pink for the inside of the ear, or reverse the colors. Cut out a small triangle of pink for the nose and paste it in the center where a nose would go. Draw in your eyes or you could cut them from paper or even add wiggle eyes. Cut out a rectangle piece of black paper – about mustache size. Then make cuts from each side of the short end towards the center of the paper without cutting all the way through. Do this several times on each side to create whiskers. Paste this above the nose. Now draw two circle cheeks and connect the mouth from the cheeks to the nose like a kitty mouth. Open up bag and it can now be a bag to collect eggs from your class egg hunt or to take crafts home in and then use for center piece at home!

Easter Jelly Bean Fudge

2 cups white chocolate chips
1 (16 ounce) container vanilla frosting
2 cups miniature jelly beans in pastel colors

Line a 9-inch square pan with foil and grease lightly. Melt the chips according to the package directions or in a heavy saucepan over very low heat, stirring constantly until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Add the frosting and stir until the mixture is smooth. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly. (Fudge mixture
should still be easy to stir, but not hot enough to melt the jelly beans.) Add the jelly beans and stir well. Spread the fudge mixture into the prepared pan and cool to room temperature. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Remove the foil and fudge from the pan together and place on a cutting surface. Carefully remove the foil and cut the fudge into small pieces. Makes 3 dozen pieces.

Edible Easter Baskets

1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 cup miniature marshmallows
3 Shredded Wheat biscuits, crushed
Jelly beans

Place butter in medium bowl. Microwave at 100% for 30 to 45 seconds or until melted. Add marshmallows, stirring to coat. Microwave at 100% for 30 to 60 seconds, or until marshmallows puff and mixture can be stirred smooth. Stir in crushed cereal. Shape into Easter baskets and when cool, fill with jelly beans. Makes 4 to 6.

The Causes of the Republicans

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The Republican Party, commonly referred to as the Grand Old Party, was founded in 1854 with ideologies rooted in the fold of conservatism and liberalism, mostly in the fields of economics. Current Republicans are composed of fiscal conservatives, social conservatives, and libertarians and have supported the concept of free-market and the thought that the individual should be responsible for his/her own actions. The Republicans emphasize that corporations play a major role in boosting the nation’s economy and have created policies to keep corporations alive and operational. Such political goal sometimes crosses with labor unions that heavily support the Democrats. Aside from economic prosperity, the Republicans also support the creation of a powerful military arm for the government. US military actions, such as the War on Terror and the invasions in Iraq and Afghanistan were publicly supported by the Republican Party. Regarding the party’s environmental policies, a significant number of Republicans have a different opinion towards global warming, stating that the effects of such phenomenon including climate and temperature changes, are part of a natural global cycle. The party has opposed the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, whose objective is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions of all member countries of the United Nations. The Republicans argue that provisions of the said arrangement hinder the industrial growth of Western countries, including the United States. Some of the other policies supported by the Republicans include: Legal ownership of firearms Abolition of homosexual marriages Abolition of abortion Enforcement of capital punishment Discontinuation of the stem cell research International free trade The Republicans also support the admission of Puerto Rico as a member state of the United States.

Miles Credit Cards: Getting the Most Out of Frequent Flyer Credit Cards

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Airline miles credit cards are among the most popular types of rewards credit cards. However, only a handful of frequent flyer miles credit cards provide great rewards and value. The reason for this is quite simple: most airline specific credit cards charge astronomical annual fees and high interest rates. Now, if you travel often and spend more than $10,000 a year, just about any airline credit card will earn you miles. However, if you want to get free miles, airline flexibility, and save money on interest and annual fees, there are only four miles credit cards you should consider: The Miles Card from Discover, The Value Miles Platinum Visa Card, American Express Blue Sky and the Citi PremierPass. Here, we will examine all four cards. First, however, we will examine the average airline specific credit card.

The lure of the “average” airline specific frequent flyer credit card is the bonus mile offering. Who wouldn’t want 15,000 miles? In addition to the substantial free miles offered, the average airline credit card also waives the annual fee during the first year. The combination of free miles and a no fee first year draws in many consumers. However, the initial perks are generally offset by the money it will cost to maintain your credit card after the first year. First, the average annual fee charged by these credit cards is $75. Ouch. And the average interest rate? More than 17%. Sure, you get a lot of miles upfront, but is it really worth paying 5% more in interest and a substantial annual fee? Not when there are much better offers available.

The Miles Card from Discover is a no annual fee airline rewards card that offers a 0% interest rate for 1 year, a low long term interest rate, and the opportunity to earn 1 mile for every dollar spent. The miles you earn can be redeemed on any airline with no blackout dates. Plus, you get 5,000 bonus miles when you make your first purchase. The interest rate on this credit card is over 6% less than that of the “average” frequent flyer card. Plus, you pay no interest on purchases or balance transfers for up to 1 year. Although you get 10,000 less miles, you’ll probably end up with a lot more money to spend on traveling with this card than you would with the “average miles card.”

The Chase Value Miles credit card is a no annual fee airline rewards card that allows you to fly on any airline with no blackout dates. They do not give away free miles, but they also don’t charge an annual fee or a high interest rate. Like the Miles Card, the Value Miles card offers a 0% interest rate for up to 1 year and offers an interest rate that is 5.5% lower than than “average miles card.” And, although the Value Miles Card does not offer any free miles, you can get a ticket to fly anywhere in the continental U.S. for only 24,000 miles. This is 5,000 to 10,000 miles less than the “average miles card” charges to get a free ticket. You don’t get free miles, but your miles do have more value.

The Citi PremierPass offers two levels of airline rewards. The regular PremierPass MasterCard offers 5,000 free miles, charges no annual fee, and offers an interest rate that is 4.25% lower than the “average miles card.” Additionally, you can earn 1 flightpoint for every three miles you fly on any airline with a ticket purchased with your card.

The Citi PremierPass also offers an elite level. Now, there is an annual fee of $75. However, you receive 15,000 bonus miles, earn 1 flightpoint for every single mile flown, and double miles on everyday purchases. The interest rate is still 4.25% less than the “average miles card,” plus, this card offers a 0% interest rate for up 1 year.

The BlueSky credit card from American Express does not try to lure you in with free miles. Instead, they offer value. For every 7500 points earned, you receive $100 that can be used for any travel expense, including car rentals, hotels, online travel sites, and cruises. The value here is that every point you earn is worth 33% more than than the average point. Plus, you can use your rewards for all of your travel expenses, not just airline tickets. Additionally, this card offers a 0% interest rate for 6 months, charges no annual fee, and offers a low long term interest rate that is 5% lower than the “average miles card.”

As you can see, airline credit cards offer a variety of perks at a variety of prices. For some, an “average miles credit card” with an annual fee of $75 and an interest rate over 17% might provide the best overall value. However, most credit card users will end up paying more money in interest and fees on their credit card than they would if they simply paid for their ticket in cash. The real value in frequent flyer credit cards can be found with the general miles credit cards that charge no fees, offer low interest rates, and offer more travel flexibility.

Credit Card Depot Inc. operates http://www.credit-card-depot.com, an online credit card information center that features links to airline
miles credit cards from every major credit card issuer. The author, Jeff Weber, has written extensively on the subject on credit card offers over the past two years. You can learn more about frequent flyer credit cards and access secure applications for airline credit cards at Credit Card Depot.
