What is a Web Host Reseller Account?

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

A web host reseller account is a web hosting account that allows you to create hosting packages to sell to your clients. You can also host multiple sites of your own using the disk space allotted to the one hosting account.

Typical features of web host reseller accounts:

They come with a reseller-level control panel that allows you to create your own packages.

You can allocate disk space and bandwidth to each site on the account and change the space and bandwidth specifications if the site’s needs change.

Most reseller accounts provide the option for private nameservers (also called private label, personalized nameservers, or virtual nameservers). For example, if your reseller account is with SomeName Hosting and your company name is ExampleName Services, your clients will enter ns1.examplename.com and ns2.examplename.com for the nameservers for their domains.

With a web host reseller account, you handle account setup, billing, and (usually) support for your clients. Your web host provider maintains the servers and answers your support questions.

While a few starter reseller hosting packages are as small as 500 MB, most reseller providers offer packages starting at 1 GB or larger. A range of packages is usually available, a few going as high as 30 GB of disk space.

Travel Massachusetts – Local’s Favorite Must See Sites

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Everyone knows about Cape Cod and Boston as great travel destinations. But, there are lesser traveled gems like Cape Ann and Western Mass. Below, I have suggested some of my favorite holiday trips. Explore Massachusetts and keep coming back for more!

Gloucester / Rockport – Gloucester and Rockport are the gems of Cape Ann. Both towns offer art communities, real fishing communities, great beaches, whale watches, and more. Gloucester has recently become famous as the real life and hollywood home of the Perfect Storm. If you are looking for history (these towns were founded shortly after the Pilgrims landed), great seafood, art, beaches (try Good Harbor Beach or Wingaersheek Beach), festivals such as St. Peter’s Fiesta, the Folklife Festival, or the Fish Festival…. visit Cape Ann and be amazed!

Salem – Travel to Salem and learn a little bit about America’s sad and scary past. Due to the hysterics of two young girls, the town of Salem (which at that time was actually located in what is now Danvers) began the Salem witch trials in 1692. Sadly, at that time, persecution of witches was not uncommon, but these trials are among the most famous. 24 people eventually died as a direct result of the Salem witch trials. Today, you can visit several museums dedicated to this piece of history. Among them are, the Peabody Essex Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, and the Witch Dungeon Museum. Salem is now a popular destination for present day witches.

National Seashore – Travel to see the dunes at Cape Cod’s National Seashore, and you will see a federally protected sea shore. There are over 40,000 acres of dunes sprawling across 40 miles running the length of Cape Cod. To truly enjoy the views, the salt air, and the crashing waves…. rent a bicycle and ride along an old Indian trail. The ride will also give you a glimpse of old new England wealth and summer spirit as you pass by historic mansions and towns.

Martha’s Vineyard – Martha’s Vineyard as long been a popular holiday destination for travelers around the world and across the continent. Charm is overflowing on this island. Take a ferry from Wood’s Hole and explore the cranberry bogs, sand dunes, and New England architecture of Martha’s Vineyard. For an alternate trip, check out Nantucket.

Pop Goes the Fourth – Nowhere in the United States is the Fourth of July as big a holiday as in Boston. Every year the Boston Symphony Pops Orchestra plays outdoors, synchronized with the fireworks display along the Esplanade. Travel to Boston for the 4th of July and you will not be disappointed.

The Freedom Trail – No Boston holiday is complete without a trip down the Freedom Trail. A red line known as the Freedom trail circles around the city of Boston, leading you to some of the most important historical sites pertaining to the United States’ Independence. Highlights of the walk include, Old Ironsides, Boston Common, the Paul Revere house, and the Old State House. You can pick up the Freedom Trail at any point and walk a part or walk the whole thing. Travel the Freedom trail and realize why Boston is a great city for history and walking.

Foliage Tour – Mohawk Trail, otherwise known as Rte. 2, is by far the most popular foliage tour in Massachusetts. Fall is an unbelievably beautiful time in New England, and Massachusetts is certainly no exception. No matter where you travel during the fall foliage season, you are sure to seem some amazing colors. Apple picking goes hand in hand with leaf peeping, so feel free to get off the beaten trail and wander around some of the more rural areas. If you have time, join in a hayride and drink some great hot apple cider!

Mount Greylock / Appalachian Trail – Mount Greylock has long been the inspiration for American writers. Today the protected lands cover 12,000 acres including the highest point in Massachusetts. Features include the Bascom Lodge, over 70 hiking trails, and amazing views. If you are interested in hiking a portion of the Appalachian trail, there is access through this park.

You can explore the nature and history of Massachusetts for years and never see at all. The beach will continue to call you, the foliage with amaze you year after year, and the museums and history will keep you thinking and learning. Enjoy the state and realize why the locals never need to leave!

Why is it Vitally Important to Buy a Travel & Medical Insurance when Booking a Trip?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Much has been written on the importance of having insurance coverage while you are on a trip, away from home. This is an issue that remains somewhat ignored by many travelers. After all, they have been traveling frequently for many years, and nothing happened so far to worry about. So, to buy a travel insurance should not a be a must. It is only an optional precaution!

But, reality urges us to believe traveling anywhere in the world without protection today, is a vital mistake. Regardless of where you are traveling in the world, you must have an insurance coverage to survive any unexpected attacks and disasters, especially after the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.A.

Let’s say, you have been planning the trip of your dreams for a long time; you have finally found the opportunity to make your long time dreams of a special trip come true.

You are so excited! You have thought of all the details. You have been actively preparing for this travel; thinking, programming, shopping . . . spending a lot of time, money, and energy! You are proud of yourself that you have finally managed to materialize your dream!

Your trip can really be an unforgettable experience from start to the end, on one condition.

When booking your trip, you should have remembered that, like most exciting events in our lives, travel has some important risks, too. For example, potential medical and/or financial risks associated with travel, can suddenly turn all the excitement and pleasures of the trip to a nightmare.

Your baggage and/or your hand bag with your money, passport, credit cards in, can be stolen leaving you desperate & frustrated in a foreign country.

No one can guarantee that a natural disaster would not happen at the place you would be staying during your trip.

An unexpected accident, injury or illness would suddenly ruin everything. In fact, in the recent years medical costs have increased dramatically, worldwide. How would you be able to pay the emergency medical expenses, expensive hospital bills if you needed an urgent treatment, or surgery and care during your travel when you have lost your money, credit cards, and passport? Isn’t it a real nightmare?

In such a frustration, the only thing you would have needed to survive was a reliable medical and travel insurance policy, wasn’t it?

Especially in the light of the horrible threats on and after September 11 terrorist attacks, the war on terror, other ruthless terror attacks in Istanbul, Spain, Egypt and London, frequent flight disruptions and cancellations, airlines’ bankruptcies, and more. In addition, travel suppliers such as tour operators and airlines worldwide have made cancellation policies more restrictive. Therefore, if you have to cancel a trip, it’s likely that a big portion of your pre-paid travel expenses will not be refunded by travel suppliers.

Recent SARS and bird flu threats have also been urging travelers and vacationers to seriously consider to buy a travel and medical insurance.

Travel Insurance types and prices defer from one travel insurance provider to another. You have to review, compare and select the best offers to suit your personal needs.

For instance, some insurance providers do not offer coverage outside the U.S.A. Some companies do not provide emergency medical coverage and care, while others do.

Some airlines do not accept to be held responsible for the acts of God, weather problems, natural disasters, riots and unrests, SARS, bird flu, and similar outbreaks. The Insurance types you will need on a trip are reviewed below:

Last Minute Cancellation Insurance

With the last minute cancellation and/or interruption insurance you will get coverage on non-refundable deposits you had made when you bought your travel insurance. Read the fine print on the policy carefully when buying this insurance. You should discuss your personal needs with your insurance agent before buying it.

Medical Insurance

This is one of the most important insurance policies you should have. Buying health and medical insurance must be considered as an important part of your travel budget. You can face a health problem or an accident anywhere and anytime during your trip. Be sure your medical and health insurance policy covers illness, accidents, surgeries, hospitalization bills in the countries you will be visiting, emergency medical transportation to your home country. Please remember to have your policies with you when traveling, leaving the copies of your insurance policies with a relative in your home country, in case the policies you have with you are lost.

Comprehensive Insurance Policy

This policy generally covers emergency medical transportation and trip cancellation and interruption, plus other needs you would expect. This insurance costs 5 to 7 percent of the total cost of the trip. You should have it for your safety.

What types of insurance policies do we need for a full protection?

The Essential Insurance Types offered by most providers are Travel, Last Minute, Medical, Health, Life, Hotel, Cruise, Air, Vacations, Luxury, car insurance, sports, and Spa Insurance policies.

Some travel insurance companies also offer affordable coverage for a wide range of winter sports including Ski, Off-Piste and Snowboarding.

We might need not one, but several types of insurance policies according to the general conditions at the destinations we’re going to.

If your your kids are going with you, many travel insurance providers let them go free with adults.

Some companies provide policies for students, backpackers, cheap travel, holiday insurance, long stay, international, family travel, single travel, annual travel, annual multi-trips, and more. It’s good to know that in this cyber age, you can buy the insurance policies you need online, without even leaving your home.

Most Travel Insurance policies cover Luggage Loss, too.

But you should definitely ask about what’s covered and what’s not when choosing Travel Insurance Policy to buy. Do ask questions, all questions you might have in mind, until you get all the information you need. It’s much better to ask questions when buying insurance than to be sorry later.

How can I find the best insurance type to suit my personal or family needs?

When choosing a travel insurance policy to buy, you should get information on the offers of various insurance providers to compare.

Knowing how time consuming is to search, compare and choose the best travel and medical insurance types and prices to suit your needs and budget, we advice to visit the websites where you can find lists and information about various offers, then compare them, and choose the best ones to suit your needs.

You should keep in mind that buying your travel insurance through travel insurance providers, instead of travel agencies, would save you money in most cases.

In the light of terrorist attacks, unexpected natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, deadly hurricanes, floods, epidemics, accidents, illness, SARS, bird flu, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives at many places around the world, especially in the recent years, every traveler must seriously consider to buy a travel health and a medical insurance, and some other insurance policies if needed, providing a reliable full coverage against both expected and unexpected threats.

How Can I Get The Web Host Services And Support I Need, Hassle-free?

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

Choosing a host or switching hosts can be an agonizing experience. There are so many choices and price structures.

You see the service level guarantees you want, but there is no way to ensure the Host’s promised service level will be kept. Sadly, past experience tells you all too often the service promises are unfulfilled.

Experience tells you to steer clear of so called “cheap” hosts, just to save $4 a month but risk huge headaches when your site goes down and no one answers the phone (or you get a “wrong number” response!).

(more tips at http://web-hosting.maxsvr.com)

Choose a host that has a starter package in the $6-$8 per month range and at least 1 GB of storage. Any Bandwidth over 30 GB per month is usually more than enough, if it isn’t you should look at the next level of packages the hosts offer. Check how long they have been in business and make sure it is at least more than one year.

Check web host reviews on several such sites and look at detailed comments. (more tips at http://web-hosting.maxsvr.com)

To get real independent feedback on host providers, email several webmasters of smaller but popular sites and ask which host they prefer and why.

Once you have found a host provider that has the right price, has been around long enough, and gets good references go to their link at http://web-hosting.maxsvr.com and place your order.

Location of Provider – I don’t think you should worry whether the provider is in your state, or if you live in another country (I live in Canada) that the provider is in your country. There is no real advantage, especially with the top tier hosts that have 24/7 customer service.

There are often disadvantages to using local providers in some regions. Their cost is often much higher and their physical internet location may result in slower delivery to most internet users, except you! (Try the “internet speed test” at toast.net and check your speed to a host and ask friend in the country where most of your traffic comes from to test their connection to the same host).

(more tips at http://web-hosting.maxsvr.com)

Lunarpages and Powweb are selections available at Toast.net and are on the top 5 provider list at http://web-hosting.maxsvr.com.

Cheap Webhosting – Is It For You

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

There’s an old adage which states that “You get what you pay for”.

In most areas of life, and business, this holds true. Not necessarily so, however, in the webhosting industry. Often, you pay too much, and don’t get what you pay for.

Several weeks ago I got a call from a web designer friend of mine.

“John,” He said “You won’t believe this”.

He went on to tell me about a Plastic Surgeon he was redesigning a website for. This client was paying $600.00 per month for his webhosting account.

“The incredible thing is” He related, “I can’t get the current host to return my phone calls or emails”.

After looking at this clients needs, I was shocked to find that there was nothing special about his site that justified his being on anything other than a basic shared webhosting plan. We quoted him a monthly rate of under five dollars.

In this case, the client was being raped by an unscrupulous host who was not only overcharging him, but not even providing the basic support he needed.

This is an extreme example, no doubt, but it all to often characterizes the poor deal which most website owners fall into.

Several years ago, there was no such thing as a webhosting industry. Nearly all websites were hosted by local ISP’s. The average monthly cost for hosting a website was $20.00 per month. Often, if you called the ISP with a technical question, they would tell you to buy a book or take a class.

Around 1996, we saw the emergence of a few “webhosting” companies. These were companies which were strictly committed to hosting websites. Using the economy of scale, they were able to offer incredibly useful webhosting packages for around $10.00 per month. What’s more, some of these companies provided useful tech support which was geared towards meeting a website owners needs.

Fast forward to 2005 and we now see the emergence of a new type of web host – the cheap webhosting provider. These are companies which offer hosting for less than $5.00 per month.

Generally, cheap webhosting providers are newer companies. There’s a reason for this. It’s extremely difficult for the older companies to lower their prices when they already have a large customer base which pays higher prices. They’d be slashing their gross, and most companies just can’t afford that.

So how do cheap webhosting providers offer such a low price to begin with?

Part of it is that servers, hard drive space and bandwidth are much, much less expensive than they were several years ago. Cheap webhosting providers capitalize on this.

Another part is that cheap hosting providers use a different business model than the older providers. Webhosting is a very competitive business. Until recently, web hosts attempted to compete by providing the most tools and features. The problem with this model is that not everyone needs everything. Most web hosts provide free backup services to all of their clients. Backups are costly, and not everyone needs or wants them, but everyone pays for them because they’re built into the cost of the package.

A cheap webhosting provider, on the other hand, might give you the basic features that everyone uses, but offer weekly backups as an available add on feature, putting the cost of backing up websites on only those customers who want that service.

This all sounds great, I know, but what about service? Will I get competent and fast customer support from a company which charges me $4.00 per month?

The answer, surprisingly, is usually yes.

Obviously, not all cheap webhosting providers will give you great service. But not all expensive webhosting providers will give good service either. Our Plastic Surgeon friend couldn’t get his $600.00 host to return his emails.

But, with a cheaper provider, the key for the providers success is customer retention. A savvy web host will endeavor to please his existing clients by providing the best support possible.

The Secret Benefit Of Search Engine Optimisation: Increased Usability

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

A higher search ranking is what many website owners dream of. What they don’t realise is that by optimising their site for the search engines, if done correctly, they can also optimise it for their site visitors.

Ultimately this means more people finding your website and increased sales and lead generation. But are search engine optimisation and usability compatible? Aren’t there trade-offs that need to be made between giving search engines what they want and giving people what they want? Read on and find out (although I’m sure you can guess the answer!)…

1. Keyword research carried out

Before you even begin building your website, you should carry out keyword research to identify which keyword phrases your site should target. Using publicly available tools such as Wordtracker (http://www.wordtracker.com), you can discover which keywords are searched for the most frequently and then specifically target those phrases.

Doing keyword research is also crucial for your site’s usability. By using the same keywords in your website that web users are searching for in search engines, you’ll literally be speaking the same language as your site visitors.

For example, you might decide to target the phrase, “sell toys”, as your website does in fact sell toys. Keyword research would undoubtedly show you that web users are actually searching for, “buy toys” (think about it – have you ever searched using the word, “sell”, when you want to buy something?). By placing the phrase, “buy toys” on to the pages on your website, you’ll be using the same words as your site visitors and they’ll be able to find what they’re looking for more easily.

2. 200 word minimum per page

Quite simply, search engines love content – the more content there is on a page the easier it is for search engines to work out what the page is actually about. Search engines may struggle to work out the point of a web page with less than 200 words, ultimately penalising that page in the search rankings.

In terms of usability, it’s also good to avoid pages with very little content. A page with less than 200 words is unlikely to contain a large amount of information, so site visitors will undoubtedly need to click elsewhere to find more detailed information. Don’t be afraid to put a reasonably large amount of information on to a page. Web users generally don’t mind scrolling down anymore, and provided the page provides mechanisms to aid scanning (such as employing sub-headings – see point 6 below) it shouldn’t be too difficult for site visitors to locate the information that they’re after.

3. 100kb maximum HMTL size

If 200 words is the minimum page content size, then 100kb is the maximum, at least in terms of HMTL file size. Anything more than this and search engines may give up on the page as it’s simply too big for them.

A 100kb HMTL file will take 20 seconds to download on a 56k dial up modem, used by three in four UK web users as of March 2004 (source: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/intc0504.pdf). Add on the time it takes for all the other parts of the page to download, such as images and JavaScript files, and you’re looking at a highly un-user-friendly download time!

4. CSS used for layout

The website of Juicy Studios (http://www.juicystudio.com) saw a six-fold increase in site visitors after switching from a table-based layout to a CSS layout. Search prefer CSS-based sites and are likely to score them higher in the search rankings because:

The code is cleaner and therefore more accessible to search engines
Important content can be placed at the top of the HTML document
There is a greater density of content compared to coding

Using CSS for layout is also highly advantageous for usability, as it leads to significantly faster download times.

5. Meaningful page title

If you know anything about search engine optimisation you’ll know that search engines place more importance on the page title than any other attribute on the page. If the title adequately describes the content of that page then search engines will be able to more accurately guess what that page is about.

A meaningful page title also helps site visitors work out where they are, both within the site and the web as a whole. The page title is the first thing that loads up, often quite a few seconds before the content, so a descriptive, keyword-rich page title can be a real aid to help users orientate themselves.

6. Headings and sub-headings used

Search engines assume that the text contained in heading tags is more important than the rest of the document text, as headings (in theory at least) summarise the content immediately below them.

Headings are also incredibly useful for your human site visitors, as they greatly aid scanning. Generally speaking, we don’t read on the web, we scan, looking for the information that we’re after. By breaking up page sections with sub-headings that effectively describe the content beneath them, scanning becomes significantly easier.

Do be sure not to abuse heading tags though. The more text you have contained in heading tags within the page, the less importance search engines assign to them.

7. Opening paragraph describes page content

We’ve already established that search engines love content, but they especially love the first 25 words or so on each page. By providing an opening paragraph that adequately describes the content of the rest of the page (or the site if it’s the homepage), you should be able to include your important keyword phrases in this crucial area.

As web users, whenever we arrive at a web page the first thing we need to know is whether this page has the information that we’re after. A great way to find this out is to scan through the first paragraph, which, if it sufficiently describes the page content, should help us out.

8. Descriptive link text

Search engines place a lot of importance on link text. They assume that link text will be descriptive of its destination and as such examine link text for all links pointing to any page. If all the links pointing to a page about widgets say ‘click here’, search engines can’t gain any information about that page without visiting it. If on the other hand, all the links say, ‘widgets’ then search engines can easily guess what that page is about.

One of the best examples of this in action is for the search term, ‘miserable failure’. So many people have linked to George Bush’s bio using this phrase as the link text, that now when miserable failure is searched for in Google, George Bush’s bio appears top of the search rankings!

As web users, we don’t generally read web pages word-for-word – we scan them looking for the information that we’re after. When you scan through text you can’t take any meaning from the word ‘click here’. Link text that effectively describes its destination is far easier to scan and you can understand the destination of the link without having to read its surrounding words.

9. Frames avoided

Frames are quite an old-school technique, and although aren’t as commonplace as they once were, do still rear up their ugly head from time to time. Using frames is one of the worst possible things you could do for your search engine ranking, as most search engines can’t follow links between frames.

Even if a search engine does index your pages and web users find you through a search engine, they’ll be taken to one of the pages within the frame. This page will probably be a content page with no navigation (navigation is normally contained in a separate frame) and therefore no way to navigate to any other page on the site!

Frames are also disadvantageous for usability as they can cause problems with the back button, printing, history and bookmarking. Put simply, say no to frames!

10. Quality content provided

This may seem like a strange characteristic of a search engine optimised website, but it’s actually crucial. Search engines, in addition to looking at page content, look at the number of links pointing in to web pages. The more inbound links a website has, all other things being equal, the higher in the search rankings it will appear.

By providing creative, unique and regularly updated content on your website, webmasters will want to link to you as doing so will add value to their site visitors. You will also be adding value to your site visitors.

Conclusion

Optimising your website for both search engines and people needn’t be a trade-off. With this much overlap between the two areas, you should easily be able to have a website that web users can find in the search engines, and when they do find it, they can find what they’re looking for quickly and efficiently.

7 Effective Homepage Tips that will have your Visitors Begging for More!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

The truth is how you present your website will determine how customers view you and your product. This can directly translate into how effective your website actually is and whether or not you get alot of sales or just a few. Think of it this way. Whenever you go into a store you usually always go in from the front entrance, not the side or the back, but the front. Just like when people visit your website, they probably always come in from the home page and go around your site. Sometimes they may come in from another link to one of your subpage but trust me they will jump on your front page to check it out and rightly so.

The front page is where all of the best information should be. Now this is not to say that your subpages as useless and that there shouldn’t be valuable information on them. I am just saying that the main page should contain timbits of all the valuable information located throughout your site. Usually your front page is the main attraction and includes features and elements that your subpages won’t have. It is almost like a “wow page” full of rich content.

Here are some tips on how to impress your visitors as soon as they get to your site:

Tip Number 1: Offer something to the visitor as soon as they get to your site: -This is important to really grab a visitors attention. Some things you may want to put at the top or near the top of your site are free offers like “free ebook” or “free domain” ect…

Tip Number 2: Give them content that is updated daily: -Make sure you have content on your front page that is updated daily. This will not only give them something to look forward to every day but it will show that your site is updated often and gives them a reason to keep coming back. Tip Number 3: Showcase new and featured product: -Showcasing products on the front page will immediately get visitors interested on what you are offering. It will help show them what your site is about as well as it will make them want to browse more of your e-store.

Tip Number 4: Add highlights from other parts of your website: Add little bits of info from your subpages to give them a view of what your site contains. For example if your site has an article section post a few new articles each day.

Tip Number 5: Offer sales and discounts on your front page: Offering discounts and coupons will definitely get people interested in what you are selling. Saving money and getting a good deal is always a good reason to look around and purchase something off of your site. Make sure the sales can be seen clearly and do have an expiration date that you stick to.

Tip Number 6: Add content that is only specific for your front page: -Another great thing to do is offer content that can only be found on your front page. This will give your visitors even more content to choose from without having to view it on every page. Some things you may just have on the front page are tips, news headlines or article samples.

Tip Number 7: Don’t post full stories or articles on the front page but timbits of them so they click through your site: -Whenever you are posting articles or stories on the front page make sure to post only a sample of the article. Include a “click here for more” link so that they can view the whole article. This will interest them more will have them going to new parts of your website. It will also help keep your front page from being cluttered.

You should be voguish today to analyze if you have a great deal or if you don’t with the moneylender that offers you a credit loan. A lot of the moneylenders wil show you a loan rate that looks comely but doesn’t feel comfortably or so after a while. At present you can suss out rates quickly on the internet and control if there are other possible traps you should be aware of. A bank in Fort Smith Arkansas or so can have a total different actual rate of interest for a 20000 dollar bank loan then a merchant bank in Lansing Michigan and that makes a vast clear gap in your monthly costs.

Investigate to see if the bank who is willing to give you a loan is beneficial. It makes no difference if you live in Harlingen Texas or in Monterey Park California a solid online examination will redeem you often lots of pain. That’s the reason why now you really need to investigate and enter if you can have a money loan at a fine percent interest rate. 14.1 percent interest rate may come out so clean but will it stay uniform after you’re going to repay your money loan.
